Jamaica is an island country in the Caribbean Sea, and is the third-largest island of the Great Antilles and the Caribbean. The original inhabitants of the Jamaican Island were the Taino peoples. When England conquered the island from the Spanish people it was given the name of Jamaica. Under the British rule, it became a leading exporter of sugar which led to the start of a plantation economy dependent on African slaves and their descendants.

Jamaica is the third most populous English-speaking country in the Americas after the United States and Canada. It is also the fourth most populous country in the Caribbean. Jamaica’s capital is Kingston and also its largest city.
